Product Description

Basic Information
Product Name: Ammonium Hexafluorosilicate
Chemical Formula: (NH4)2SiF6
CAS Number: 16919-31-6
Appearance:White crystalline powder or granular solid, odorless.
Commercial products may contain trace impurities, appearing slightly off-white.
Solubility:Slightly soluble in water (≈1.2g/100 mL at 20ºC); solubility increases with temperature.Insoluble in ethanol and acetone; reacts with strong acids (e.g., sulfuric acid) to release toxic hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas.
Melting/Decomposition Point:Decomposes at≈200ºC  into ammonia , silicon tetrafluoride, and hydrogen fluoride (HF):
Density: Approx. 2.01g/cm3

Applications
Agriculture (Pesticides and Fertilizers)
Insecticides/Fungicides:
Used as a herbicide and insecticide for controlling mites, scale insects, and fungal diseases in crops (e.g., fruit trees, tea plants).
Example: Sprayed on citrus trees to prevent citrus rust mites.
Fertilizers:
Provides both fluoride and nitrogen (as ammonium), but its use is restricted in some regions due to fluoride toxicity to plants and soil.
Glass and Ceramics Industry
Glass Etching:
Mixed with other fluorides to etch and frost glass surfaces (e.g., decorative glass, frosted light bulbs).
Ceramic Glazes:
Acts as a flux to lower the melting point of glazes, improving their fluidity and gloss.
Metal Treatment and Electroplating
Aluminum Surface Treatment:
Used in pickling solutions to remove oxide layers and prepare aluminum for coating or bonding.
Zinc Plating:
Improves the adhesion and uniformity of zinc coatings in certain electroplating baths.
Construction and Concrete Industry
Concrete Hardener:
Applied to concrete surfaces to react with calcium hydroxide, forming insoluble calcium fluorosilicate and enhancing surface hardness and wear resistance.
Mortar Additive:
Inhibits efflorescence (white salt deposits) in cement-based mortars.
Other Applications
Wood Preservation: Imparts resistance to insects and fungi (e.g., in outdoor wood products).
Textile Industry: Used as a mordant in dyeing to fix dyes onto fibers.

Safety
Hazards:Toxicity: Oral LD50 for rats: ≈125mg/kg (highly toxic); inhalation of dust irritates the respiratory tract.
Corrosivity: Dust or solutions irritate skin and eyes; HF released in acid reactions causes severe burns.
Environmental Risk: Fluoride ions are toxic to aquatic life and can accumulate in soil, affecting plant growth.
Safety Measures:
Wear protective gloves, goggles, and a dust mask; operate in a well-ventilated area or fume hood.
In case of skin contact, rinse with water for 15 minutes; for eye contact, flush with water and seek medical attention immediately.

Storage:
Store in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated area, away from acids, alkalis, and food.
Avoid moisture to prevent hydrolysis.

Handling:
Prevent dust generation during use; avoid contact with strong acids or alkalis.
Dispose of waste according to local hazardous waste regulations.
