Appearance: Anhydrous chromium sulfate is a dark green powder, while the common crystalline hydrate is in the form of purple or red blocks or flakes.
Melting Point: Approximately 100ºC (losing crystal water)
Solubility: It is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is acidic. It is insoluble in alcohol.
Chemical Properties
The chromium in chromium sulfate is in the +3 valence state, with certain oxidizing properties, but the oxidizing ability is weak.
It can react with alkalis to form chromium hydroxide precipitates. For example, when reacting with sodium hydroxide, chromium hydroxide Cr(OH)3 and sodium sulfate Na2SO4 are produced. The chemical equation is:
Cr2(SO4)3+6NaOH=2Cr(OH)3 ↓+3Na2SO4.
It can also undergo complexation reactions with some ligands to form complexes.
Uses
Tanning Industry: It is widely used in the leather tanning process. It can react with the collagen in the leather to improve the quality and durability of the leather, making the leather soft and elastic.
Dye Industry: It is used as a mordant in the dyeing process. It can help dyes adhere to fabrics better, improving the color fastness and brightness of the dyed products.
