Basic Information
Indium chloride exists in the forms of indium dichloride (InCl2) and indium trichloride (InCl3). The molecular weight of indium dichloride is 185.72, and that of indium trichloride is 221.18.
Indium trichloride is an inorganic compound and one of the most common soluble derivatives of indium compounds.
Physical Properties
Indium dichloride is a colorless, hygroscopic solid with a melting point of 235ºC and a boiling point of 570ºC. Indium trichloride is a white powder or flaky crystal, which is hygroscopic, with a density of 3.46 g/cm3, a melting point of 586ºC, and it sublimes when heated to 300ºC and volatilizes at 600ºC.
Indium dichloride decomposes into indium trichloride and metallic indium when it comes into contact with water. Indium trichloride is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is acidic. It is slightly soluble in alcohol and ether. It will decompose in the air when it gets damp to produce indium hydroxide. It can react with alkalis to form indium hydroxide and with alkali - metal salts or alkaline - earth - metal salts to form precipitates of the corresponding metal chlorides. It can also react with many organic substances such as alcohols, aldehydes, and amines.
Production Process
Indium dichloride can be prepared by completely melting indium trichloride and a stoichiometric amount of metallic indium in a vacuum - sealed glass container. The product can be purified by vacuum distillation. It can also be prepared by heating indium trichloride to above 600ºC while introducing hydrogen mixed with 15% hydrogen chloride. After preparation, it is heated at a temperature slightly above the melting point for 15 minutes, and nitrogen is slowly introduced during this period to remove hydrogen chloride.
Indium trichloride is usually prepared by the direct reaction of metallic indium and dry chlorine gas at 150 - 300ºC. The pure product is purified by sublimation (300ºC). It can also be prepared by the reaction of indium sesquichloride with hydrogen chloride at 100ºC. Indium trichloride tetrahydrate is prepared by dissolving metallic indium in hydrochloric acid and then crystallizing.
Application Areas
Organic Synthesis: Indium trichloride is commonly used as a Lewis acid and is an important reagent in organic synthesis, which can catalyze various organic reactions.
Electronics Industry: High - purity anhydrous indium chloride is mainly used in the production of LED core chips and is an irreplaceable core raw material in the field of energy - saving semiconductor electronic lighting cutting - edge technology. It is also used to prepare indium - gallium and indium - phosphorus semiconductor materials.
Other Areas: It can be used in electroplating. The indium trichloride solution added with glucose and sodium cyanide is used for electroplating. It is also used to prepare other indium compounds, such as indium oxide and indium sulfide. It also has certain applications in the medical field.
Packaging and Storage
Packaging: Usually, the inner packaging is a sealed glass bottle, bundled with foam and filled, and the outer packaging is a carton or a sealed iron drum.
Storage: It should be stored in a cool, dry, well - ventilated environment, free from flammable substances, acids, alkalis, and strong oxidizing substances. After being stored for more than 3 months, it should be re - inspected to confirm that the quality has not changed before use.
