Product Description

Product Description

Basic Information
Product Name: Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate.
Chemical Formula: Y(NO3)3. The common hydrate is the hexahydrate, with the formula Y(NO3)3⋅6H2O.
CAS No. : 10361-93-0 (the CAS No. of the hexahydrate is 13494-98-9).
Appearance: It is a colorless or white crystalline powder. The hexahydrate is a colorless transparent or white block - like crystal.
Solubility: It is highly soluble in water and also soluble in ethanol and acetone.
Melting Point: The melting point of the hexahydrate is about 58ºC.
Density: The density of the hexahydrate is approximately 2.68 g/cm³.
Stability: It is stable under normal temperature and pressure. However, when heated, it may decompose to release nitrogen oxides. It should be stored away from reducing agents, combustibles, and other substances to avoid chemical reactions.

Production Process
Yttrium nitrate is usually prepared by reacting yttrium oxide Y2O3 with nitric acid.
The chemical reaction equation is:
Y2O3+6HNO3→2Y(NO3)3+3H2O.
Yttrium oxide is slowly added to dilute nitric acid, and the reaction is carried out at a certain temperature. After the reaction is completed, the solution is evaporated and concentrated, and then cooled for crystallization to obtain yttrium nitrate hexahydrate crystals.

Application Areas
Ceramics and Glass Industry: It is used as an additive in the ceramics and glass industry. Adding yttrium nitrate can improve the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and optical properties of ceramics and glass. For example, in the production of glass, it can be used to adjust the refractive index and improve the transparency and chemical stability of glass. In ceramics, it helps to enhance the density and strength of ceramic materials, and is also beneficial for improving the appearance quality of ceramic products.
Catalysis Field: Yttrium nitrate can be used as a catalyst or catalyst precursor in some chemical reactions. It has certain catalytic activity in reactions such as organic synthesis and petroleum cracking. Due to the special electronic structure of yttrium ions, they can affect the reaction process and rate, helping to improve the conversion rate and selectivity of chemical reactions.
Phosphor Industry: It is an important raw material for manufacturing phosphors. Yttrium - based phosphors have good luminescence properties and are widely used in lighting, display, and other fields. For example, in fluorescent lamps and light - emitting diodes (LEDs), yttrium - containing phosphors can convert ultraviolet light or blue light into visible light of other wavelengths, thereby improving the luminous efficiency and color rendering index of light - emitting devices.
Metal Surface Treatment: In metal surface treatment processes, yttrium nitrate can be used to prepare conversion coatings or surface modifiers. These coatings can improve the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and adhesion of metal surfaces, thereby enhancing the service life and performance of metal products.

Packaging and Transportation
Packaging: It is usually packaged in sealed plastic or glass bottles to prevent moisture absorption and reaction with the outside air. For large - scale transportation and storage, it can also be packed in metal drums or plastic - lined bags. The packaging should be labeled with clear product information, including name, chemical formula, content, hazard warnings, and handling precautions.
Transportation: During transportation, it should be protected from moisture, heat, and impact. It should be transported separately from flammable, explosive, and reducing substances in accordance with the relevant regulations for hazardous chemical transportation. Special attention should be paid to preventing leakage and contamination to ensure the safety of transportation and the environment.
