Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance: Anhydrous cerium chloride is a colorless solid, and cerium chloride heptahydrate is a colorless - to - yellowish rhombic crystal.
Melting Point: The melting point of anhydrous cerium chloride is 817ºC. Cerium chloride heptahydrate starts to lose water above 90ºC and becomes anhydrous at 230ºC.
Density: The density of anhydrous cerium chloride is 3.97 g/cm³, and that of cerium chloride heptahydrate is 3.94 g/cm³.
Solubility: It is highly soluble in water and ethanol but insoluble in carbon tetrachloride and benzene.
Applications
Catalytic Field: It is used in petroleum catalysts and automobile exhaust catalysts. In the olefin polymerization reaction, it is used as a catalyst together with aluminum salts or magnesium salts.
Metal Preparation: It is an important raw material for the preparation of metallic cerium and other cerium salts.
Organic Synthesis: In the nucleophilic addition reaction of Grignard reagents or organolithiums with carbonyls, the addition of anhydrous cerium chloride can control side reactions and increase the yield and selectivity.
Materials Field: It can be used as an additive in the glass industry, with functions such as decolorization and clarification. It is also used in ceramic glazes and the electronics industry.
Medical Field: It has been applied in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates and has good application prospects.
Production and Packaging
Preparation Method: It is obtained by dissolving the rare - earth ammonium sulfate double salt with sodium hydroxide, oxidizing it with air, and then leaching it with dilute hydrochloric acid. It can also be prepared by heating a mixture of cerium dioxide or cerium chloride hydrate and ammonium chloride.
Packaging and Storage: It is usually packed in two - layer polyethylene plastic bags and placed in an drum. It should be stored in a ventilated and dry warehouse to prevent the packaging from being damaged and getting damp.
