Basic Information
Product Name: Potassium Tetrafluoroaluminate
Formula: KAlF4
Molar Mass: 142.07 g/mol
CAS Number: 13775-52-5
Appearance: White crystalline powder or colorless crystals, odorless.
Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water (solubility increases with temperature); soluble in hydrofluoric acid (HF) and alkaline solutions.
Melting Point: ~560°C (decomposes at high temperatures, releasing toxic fluoride gases).
Density: ~2.83 g/cm³ (solid).
Applications
Aluminum Smelting (Primary Use):
Used as a flux in the Hall-Héroult process for producing aluminum metal. It lowers the melting point of alumina (Al2O3) from ~2050°C to ~950°C, reducing energy consumption.
Improves conductivity of the molten bath and facilitates the separation of aluminum metal from the electrolyte.
Glass and Ceramics:
As a flux in glass manufacturing to reduce melting temperature and improve clarity; used in ceramic glazes to enhance fluidity and color retention.
Metal Surface Treatment:
In metal cleaning and soldering processes to remove oxide layers and promote adhesion of coatings.
Chemical Synthesis:
A source of fluoride ions in organic and inorganic reactions, such as fluorination of organic compounds.
Health and Safety
Toxicity: Toxic if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through skin. Fluoride ions can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation, metabolic disturbances (e.g., hypocalcemia), and damage to the kidneys and bones.
Corrosivity: Dust or solutions can irritate eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; HF released from acid reactions is highly corrosive and poses immediate danger.
Handling Precautions:
Use in well-ventilated areas or with local exhaust ventilation.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, full-face respirators (for dusty environments), and protective clothing.
In case of spillage, contain with non-combustible materials and neutralize with lime (CaO); avoid contact with water (may release HF).
Environmental Impact
Aquatic Toxicity: Soluble fluoride ions can harm aquatic life, disrupting ecosystems by affecting pH and causing bioaccumulation in organisms.
Soil Contamination: Persistent in soil, potentially impacting plant growth and groundwater if leached.
