Product Description
Basic Information
- Chemical Name: Titanium Tetrachloride
- Molecular Formula: TiCl4
- Molecular Weight: 189.68 g/mol
- CAS Registry Number: 7550-45-0
- Synonyms: Titanium(IV) chloride, TET
Physical and Chemical Properties
- Appearance: Colorless to pale yellow fuming liquid (turns dark brown with impurities); emits dense white fumes in moist air.
- Melting Point: -25 °C (248 K)
- Boiling Point: 136.4 °C (409.5 K)
- Density: 1.726 g/cm³ at 25 °C
- Solubility:
- Reacts violently with water, forming hydrochloric acid (HCl) and titanium oxides/hydroxides.
- Soluble in organic solvents (e.g., benzene, carbon tetrachloride) but insoluble in hydrocarbons.
- Chemical Characteristics:
- Strong Lewis acid, readily accepts electron pairs (e.g., forms adducts with ethers).
- Highly reactive with nucleophiles (water, alcohols, amines), releasing HCl gas.
- Thermally stable but decomposes at high temperatures (> 1000 °C) into titanium dichloride and chlorine.
Applications
- Primary Industrial Use:
- Production of Titanium Metal: Via the Kroll process, where TiCl4 is reduced by magnesium or sodium to yield spongy titanium.
- Catalyst in Polymerization: As a component of Ziegler-Natta catalysts for synthesizing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).
- Chemical Synthesis:
- Precursor for Titanium Compounds: Used to prepare titanium oxides (TiO2), titanium alkoxides (e.g., titanium isopropoxide), and metal titanium carbides/nitrides.
- Reagent in Organic Chemistry: For chlorination reactions and as a Lewis acid catalyst in Friedel-Crafts alkylation/acylation.
- Specialty Applications:
- Smoke Generation: Due to its rapid hydrolysis in air, used in military smoke screens and pyrotechnics.
- Coating and Deposition: In chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to form titanium dioxide coatings for pigments, semiconductors, or optical films.
- Metallurgy: As a flux in welding and soldering of titanium alloys.
Safety and Handling
- Health Hazards:
- Corrosive: Causes severe burns on skin and eyes; inhalation of fumes irritates respiratory tract, leading to coughing or pulmonary edema.
- Toxicity: Acute oral LD50 in rats: ~ 500 mg/kg; chronic exposure may damage liver and kidneys.
- Environmental Risks:
- Reacts with water to release HCl, causing soil and water acidification; toxic to aquatic life.
- Handling Precautions:
- Use in a fume hood with full personal protective equipment (PPE: gloves, goggles, chemical-resistant clothing).
- Store in airtight, dry containers at room temperature, away from moisture and reactive materials (water, bases).
- In case of spillage, neutralize with lime (CaO) and absorb with inert materials; avoid contact with water.
