Physical and Chemical Properties
Melting point: It has a relatively high melting point of 227ºC.
Solubility: It is almost insoluble in water but soluble in some organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, dichloromethane, and DMF (dimethylformamide). It is stable at room temperature but is hygroscopic. It may decompose at high temperatures or when reacting with strong oxidants.
Synthesis
It can be synthesized by refluxing a mixture of dimethyl isophthalate and hydrazine hydrate in methanol for several hours. Then, the reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and poured into ice - cold water. The resulting isophthalic dihydrazide is filtered and recrystallized from ethanol.
Uses
It belongs to the aromatic dicarboxylic acid dihydrazide cross - linking agent and can react with rubber through the "bridging" reaction to improve the heat resistance, weather resistance, mechanical properties, and other performances of polymers. When used in the base gum of the tread of engineering machinery radial tires, it can significantly reduce the dynamic heat generation of tires, increase the heat transfer speed, and significantly improve the durability of tires without affecting their mechanical properties.
It has important applications in the synthetic field and can be used to synthesize a variety of compounds, including drugs, pesticides, and functional materials.
