Functions and Uses
Organic Synthesis Raw Material: It is an important ethylating agent in organic synthesis. It can be used to convert carboxylates into ethyl esters, carbanions into ethyl derivatives, thioureas into ethyl isothiuronium salts, and amines into ethylamines.
Pesticide Field: It is used as a fumigant insecticide for stored grains, warehouses and buildings in agriculture.
Pharmaceutical Field: It is used as an intermediate for some drugs in the pharmaceutical industry.
Other Uses: It can also be used as a refrigerant, solvent, analytical reagent, and for the ethylation of gasoline.
Production Methods
Reaction of Ethanol with Sodium Bromide: Add 40% sodium bromide solution and ethanol into the reaction kettle, stir and add sulfuric acid, control the temperature not to exceed 50ºC. After the addition, react at 45 - 50ºC for 2 hours, distill, neutralize the distillate with 3% sodium carbonate solution, and stand to separate the organic phase to obtain bromoethane.
Reaction of Ethanol with Bromine: Slowly add bromine to the suspension of sulfur and water under stirring, keep the temperature at 35 - 40ºC, then add ethanol, and add sulfuric acid at 25 - 28ºC. React for 42 hours and distill to collect the fraction at 38 - 39ºC to obtain bromoethane.
Storage and Transportation
Storage: It should be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources. Keep the container sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, alkalis and food chemicals, and avoid mixing storage.
Transportation: During transportation, make sure that the container does not leak, collapse, fall or be damaged. Transport it according to the regulations for dangerous goods transportation.
