Terbium nitrate has the chemical formula Tb(NO3)3. It commonly exists in the form of hydrates, such as tetrahydrate Tb(NO3)3⋅4H2O, pentahydrate Tb(NO3)3 ⋅5H2O, and hexahydrate Tb(NO3)3⋅6H2O.
Properties
Physical Properties: Terbium nitrate is usually a white crystal or powder. It is highly soluble in water and alcohol and is deliquescent. Different hydrates have different molar masses. For example, the molar mass of anhydrous terbium nitrate is
344.946g/mol , that of the tetrahydrate is 417.01g/mol, and that of the hexahydrate is 453.042g/mol.
Chemical Properties: Hydrated terbium nitrate decomposes when heated. It first produces TbONO3, and further heating yields terbium oxide (III, IV). It can react with alkalis to form terbium hydroxide precipitate and can undergo complexation reactions with some organic reagents.
Production Process
Terbium nitrate can be prepared by dissolving terbium (III) oxide, terbium hydroxide, or terbium carbonate in nitric acid. The relevant reaction equations are as follows:
Tb2O3+6HNO3 →2Tb(NO3)3 +3H2O
Tb(OH)3+3HNO3 →Tb(NO3)3+3H2 O
The resulting solution can be carefully evaporated to obtain hydrated terbium nitrate.
Application Areas
