Physical and Chemical Properties
Physical Properties
- Appearance: Colorless to light yellow liquid with a special amine-like odor.
- Melting Point: -6°C
- Boiling Point: 113-114°C (at atmospheric pressure)
- Density: 0.912 g/cm³ (25°C)
- Solubility: Highly soluble in water, ethanol, diethyl ether, and most organic solvents.
- Volatility: Volatile at room temperature; vapor density is greater than air.
Chemical Properties
- Acidity and Basicity:
- The lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom participates in ring conjugation (forming an aromatic system), so it shows weak basicity (pKb ≈ 13.5) and hardly forms stable salts with strong acids.
- The methyl group on the nitrogen atom is less prone to protonation, but electrophilic substitution can occur on the ring carbon atoms.
- Electrophilic Substitution Reactions:
- The ring has high electron density (conjugated system), making electrophilic substitution easy at positions 2 and 3 (e.g., halogenation, nitration, sulfonation). For example:
- Reaction with bromine at room temperature gives 2-bromo-N-methylpyrrole;
- Nitration requires mild conditions (e.g., dilute nitric acid + acetic anhydride) to avoid ring destruction.
- Oxidation and Reduction:
- Easily oxidized by strong oxidants (e.g., KMnO4) to open the ring, forming corresponding carboxylic acids or amides;
- Catalytic hydrogenation yields N-methylpyrrolidine (saturated heterocycle).
- Nucleophilic Reactions:
- The methyl group on the nitrogen atom can lose a proton under strong bases (e.g., NaH) to form a carbanion, acting as a nucleophile in reactions (e.g., alkylation, acylation).
Application Fields
- Organic Synthesis Intermediate:
- Pharmaceutical Synthesis: Used to prepare antihypertensives, antibiotics (e.g., intermediates for cephalosporins), sedatives, etc.;
- Pesticide Synthesis: Raw material for synthesizing insecticides and herbicides (e.g., precursors of pyrrole-based pesticides).
- Polymer Materials:
- As a comonomer in synthesizing conductive polymers (e.g., polypyrrole derivatives) for electronic devices and sensor materials;
- Additive for preparing high-performance coatings and resins to improve corrosion resistance and thermal stability.
- Fragrances and Cosmetics:
- Its derivatives have special scents, used in blending food flavors and daily chemical fragrances;
- Added as a solvent or stabilizer in cosmetics.
- Other Uses:
- Intermediate for rubber vulcanization accelerators;
- As an extractant in petrochemicals to separate hydrocarbon compounds.
Safety and Storage
Hazards
- Toxicity:
- Dermal Contact: May cause allergic reactions; liquid splashing into eyes can lead to redness and pain;
- Inhalation/Oral Ingestion: Vapors irritate the respiratory tract; ingestion may cause nausea and vomiting. LD50 (rat, oral) is approximately 500 mg/kg, belonging to low toxicity, but high-concentration vapors have neurotoxicity.
- Flammability and Explosiveness:
Flammable liquid with a flash point of 21°C. Vapors form explosive mixtures with air (explosion limit 1.4%-8.2%), and are prone to combustion upon contact with open flames or high heat.
- Environmental Hazards:
Toxic to aquatic organisms; avoid leakage into water bodies. It is biodegradable but may accumulate in organisms.
Safety Measures
- Protection:
Wear chemical-resistant gloves and goggles during operation, work in a fume hood (to prevent vapor inhalation), and avoid direct skin contact.
- Storage:
Store sealed in a cool, ventilated explosion-proof warehouse, away from fire sources and oxidants. Separate from strong acids and bases, and ground containers to prevent static electricity.
- Emergency Treatment:
For leaks, adsorb with sand or transfer with an explosion-proof pump; use foam or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers for fires. Rinse skin immediately with water upon contact, and seek medical attention if ingested.
