Product Description

Product Description

Basic Information
Product Name: Cumene Hydroperoxide (CHP)
CAS No.:80-15-9
Molecular Formula:C9H12O2
Appearance:Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid at room temperature; pure product is a crystalline solid (usually stored and used as a solution).
Melting Point:Approx. 45-47 °C (pure substance).
Boiling Point:Decomposes at approx. 150 °C (high-temperature decomposition, no conventional boiling point).
Density:Approx. 1.04 g/mL (20 °C, in solution).
Solubility:Slightly soluble in water; readily soluble in organic solvents (e.g., benzene, toluene, acetone).
Odor:Has a strong oxidizing odor; irritating to eyes and mucous membranes.

Chemical Properties
Strong Oxidizing Property:
As an organic peroxide, it contains a peroxide bond (-O-O-) and easily decomposes to generate free radicals (e.g., cumyl radicals), making it a common initiator in polymerization reactions.
Thermal Instability:
Decomposes when heated, releasing oxygen and forming byproducts such as acetophenone and phenol.
Reacts violently with reducing agents, acids, bases, and combustible materials.
Hydrolysis:
Slowly hydrolyzes in water or acidic/basic environments, though the reaction is generally mild under normal conditions.

Applications
Polymer Industry:
Polymerization Initiator:Used in the production of polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and styrene-based resins (e.g., ABS, PS), where it initiates free radical polymerization.
Curing Agent:For unsaturated polyester resins in composite materials (e.g., fiberglass, coatings).
Chemical Synthesis:
As an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis (e.g., epoxidation reactions, production of phenol and acetone via decomposition).
Rubber Industry:
Used in rubber vulcanization as a cross-linking agent, especially for synthetic rubbers like EPDM.
Other Applications:
In the production of epoxy resins, polyurethane foams, and as a bleach in the textile industry.

Safety and Handling
Hazard Class:
UN Number:3109 (Organic peroxides, Type F, liquid).
Classified as a flammable liquid and strong oxidizer; poses a risk of fire or explosion from heat, friction, or contamination.
Toxicity:
Skin/Eye Contact:Causes severe irritation and possible burns; may be absorbed through the skin.
Inhalation/Ingestion:Irritates respiratory tract and digestive system; high doses may cause systemic toxicity.
LD50 (Oral, Rat):Approx. 1,200 mg/kg (moderate toxicity).
Safety Precautions:
Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and incompatible materials (e.g., amines, acids, metals).
Use explosion-proof equipment and avoid mechanical shock or vibration.
Wear protective gear (gloves, goggles, lab coat) and use in a fume hood.
In case of leakage, isolate the area and clean up with non-combustible absorbents; avoid water contact (may generate heat).
