I. Product Introduction
Trichloroacetic acid, also known as trichloroacetic acid, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2HCl3O2. It appears as colorless crystals, accompanied by a pungent odor, and is highly deliquescent. It can be well miscible with water, ethanol, ether, etc.

Density: 1.63g/cm³ (at 25ºC)
Solubility: Highly soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Its aqueous solution is acidic, and the pH value of a 0.1mol/L aqueous solution is approximately 1.2. It is much more acidic than acetic acid, approaching that of hydrochloric acid. When its aqueous solution is heated to the boiling point, it will decarboxylate and decompose to produce chloroform and carbon dioxide. At the same time, it can react with a variety of inorganic and organic bases to form salts.
III. Preparation Methods
Acetic Acid Chlorination Method: Using acetic acid as the raw material, chlorination is carried out in the presence of sunlight or a catalyst (such as sulfur powder). The chloroacetic acid mother liquor is further chlorinated at 90 - 100ºC, and then through crystallization treatment, trichloroacetic acid can be obtained.
Trichloroacetaldehyde Oxidation Method: Oxidize trichloroacetaldehyde with fuming nitric acid by co-melting, and the reaction temperature is controlled at 80 - 100ºC; it can also be prepared by oxidizing trichloroacetaldehyde with nitric acid or potassium permanganate.
Deep Chlorination Method of Monochloroacetic Acid Mother Liquor: Using the monochloroacetic acid mother liquor as the raw material, with sulfur powder as the catalyst, further deep chlorination is carried out, and then the product is obtained by crystallization.
Tetrachloroethylene Conversion Method: Using tetrachloroethylene as the raw material, at 120ºC, oxygen is introduced for oxidation under ultraviolet irradiation; or using tetrachloroethylene as the raw material, with titanium as the catalyst, hydrolysis is carried out at 40 - 120ºC, and trichloroacetic acid can be obtained.
IV. Main Applications
Organic Synthesis Field: It is an important raw material and intermediate for the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds, participating in the construction of many complex organic molecules, and facilitating the research, development, and production of new materials and fine chemicals.
Pharmaceutical Industry: It can be used to prepare a variety of drugs, such as antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, etc.; at the same time, a trichloroacetic acid solution (such as a concentration of 80% - 90%) can also be directly used to treat condyloma acuminata. It corrodes the wart body by chemically coagulating proteins.
Agricultural Aspect: As an efficient herbicide, it can effectively inhibit the growth of weeds, ensure the healthy growth of crops, increase crop yields, and also play a key role in the synthesis of pesticides.
Chemical Analysis and Research: It is often used as a protein precipitant. In the process of DNA and RNA extraction, it helps to separate and purify biological macromolecules; it can also be used for acidity adjustment in analytical chemistry and as a catalyst for certain chemical reactions.
Other Applications: In the reactive dyeing of wool, adding trichloroacetic acid can significantly increase the dye uptake percentage to more than 95%, improving the dyeing effect. It can also be used for the surface treatment of metals to remove surface impurities and oxides.
V. Safety Precautions
Hazard Overview: Trichloroacetic acid is a Class II organic acidic corrosive substance, with strong corrosiveness. It can stimulate the skin to form blisters. Its powder mixed with air may form an explosive mixture. When exposed to high heat, it will decompose to produce toxic and corrosive gases, causing harm to the human body and the environment.
Routes of Invasion: It can enter the human body through inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption.
Health Hazards: Inhaling its dust will irritate the respiratory tract, causing coughing, chest pain, and central nervous system depression; direct contact with the eyes will cause serious damage and even blindness; skin contact will lead to chemical burns; oral intake will burn the oral cavity and digestive tract, presenting symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and collapse.
Protection Measures
- Respiratory Protection: When the concentration in the air exceeds the standard, wear a gas mask; when necessary, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Eye Protection: Wear chemical safety goggles.
- Body Protection: Wear acid and alkali-resistant work clothes.
- Hand Protection: Wear rubber gloves.
- Others: Smoking, eating, and drinking are strictly prohibited in the workplace; take a shower and change clothes in a timely manner after work to maintain personal cleanliness and hygiene.
Emergency Treatment
- Leakage Emergency Treatment: Isolate the leakage contaminated area, set up warning signs, and emergency treatment personnel need to wear gas masks and chemical protective clothing. For a small amount of leakage, collect it with a clean shovel into a dry, clean, and covered container; you can also sprinkle soda ash on the ground, and then rinse it with a large amount of water. Dilute the rinsing water and put it into the wastewater system. In case of a large amount of leakage, cover it with plastic sheeting and canvas, and then collect and recycle it or transport it to a waste treatment site for harmless treatment.
- First Aid Measures
- Skin Contact: Immediately remove the contaminated clothing and rinse with a large amount of flowing water for at least 15 minutes; if there is a burn, seek medical treatment promptly.
- Eye Contact: Immediately lift the eyelids and rinse with flowing water or normal saline for at least 15 minutes, and then seek medical treatment.
- Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene to a place with fresh air and keep the respiratory tract unobstructed; if breathing is difficult, give oxygen inhalation; if breathing stops, immediately perform artificial respiration and seek medical treatment in a timely manner.
- Ingestion: For those who have mistakenly taken it, rinse the mouth immediately, drink milk or egg white, and seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
- Fire Extinguishing Method: Use fog water, foam, carbon dioxide, sand, etc. to extinguish the fire.
VI. Storage and Transportation
Storage: Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse, away from fire sources and heat sources, and keep the packaging sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, alkalis, etc., and avoid mixed storage.
Transportation: During transportation, ensure that the container does not leak, collapse, fall, or be damaged. Equip with the corresponding variety and quantity of fire-fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment during transportation. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport with oxidants, alkalis, food chemicals, etc. During transportation, it should be protected from exposure to the sun, rain, and high temperatures.
