Basic Information
Product Name: Hydroxycitronellal; 3,7-Dimethyl-7-hydroxyoctanal
Molecular Formula: C20H20O2
Molecular Weight: 172.27 g/mol
CAS Number: 107-75-5
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance:
Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a mild sweet floral odor (similar to lily of the valley) and a slight citrus undertone.
Density: 0.940-0.950 g/mL (25°C)
Boiling Point: 126-128°C (1.33 kPa, under reduced pressure)
Melting Point: Non-fixed (liquid at room temperature)
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water (≈1.5 g/100 mL), readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and propylene glycol.
Chemical Properties:
Contains an aldehyde group (-CHO) and a hydroxyl group (-OH), making it chemically reactive:
The aldehyde group is easily oxidized to hydroxycitronellic acid or reacts with amines to form Schiff bases.
The hydroxyl group can participate in esterification reactions to form ester derivatives (e.g., acetates, benzoates).
May decompose under strong acids, bases, or high temperatures, and slowly oxidizes in air, gradually darkening in color.
Major Application Fields
(1) Fragrance and Flavor Industry
Core Uses:
A key lily-of-the-valley-type fragrance widely used in daily chemical fragrances (perfumes, shampoos, soaps, creams, etc.).
Olfactory characteristics: Fresh, sweet, and soft, often blended with floral notes like rose, jasmine, and lily to enhance aroma layers and longevity.
Typical Formulation Applications:
Used at 5-15% in floral fragrances and as a modifier (1-3%) in fruity or aldehyde-based fragrances.
(2) Cosmetics and Skin Care
Functions:
Provides both moisturizing and fragrance properties in lotions, toners, body washes, etc.
Note: Some individuals are sensitive to aldehyde-based fragrances, which may cause skin irritation. Thus, usage levels in cosmetics are typically controlled below 1%, with safety assessments required.
(3) Organic Synthesis Intermediates
Downstream Products:
Hydroxycitronellic acid: Oxidized to produce surfactants and lubricants.
Hydroxycitronellal acetals/ketals: Used as fragrance fixatives or pharmaceutical intermediates (e.g., in synthesizing antihistamines).
Ester derivatives: React with organic acids to form esters for complex fragrance (e.g., hydroxycitronellal acetate has a sweet fruity aroma).
(4) Other Uses
Textile auxiliaries: Used in synthesizing softeners and antistatic agents.
Leather industry: As a component of fatliquors to improve leather handfeel.
Safety and Regulations
Toxicity and Irritation:
Acute toxicity: Oral LD50 in rats > 5000 mg/kg (low toxicity).
Skin irritation: Pure product may cause mild irritation; diluting to below 5% is generally safe (refer to EU REACH regulations).
Allergenicity: Classified as one of the 26 allergenic fragrances in the EU, requiring labeling as "Hydroxycitronellal" in cosmetics with restricted usage (typically ≤0.01%-0.1%, varying by product type).
Regulatory Requirements:
IFRA (International Fragrance Association) Standards: Maximum allowable concentration of 0.015% in leave-on cosmetics (e.g., creams) and 0.05% in rinse-off products (e.g., shampoos).
China GB 7916-2014: Cosmetic fragrance raw materials must meet safety requirements, with prohibited use in spray products (due to inhalation risks).
Storage and Transportation
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry, and dark place in a sealed container, away from oxidizing agents, acids, and bases.
Recommended storage temperature: 5-25°C. Avoid long-term exposure to high temperatures or humidity to prevent oxidation and degradation.
Packaging:
Industrial grade: 200 kg plastic drums or galvanized iron drums (lined with polyethylene).
Fragrance grade: 5-25 kg glass or stainless steel containers to prevent metal ion-catalyzed oxidation.
Shelf Life: Unopened products have a shelf life of approximately 2 years. After opening, use promptly and reseal tightly.
