Key Properties

1. Solubility:
   • Insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol, alkaline solutions (e.g., sodium hydroxide), and some organic solvents (e.g., acetone).
   • Ethanol solutions (commonly called "shellac varnish" or "polish") are widely used as coatings.
2. Physical Properties:
   • Hard, glossy, and fast-drying, forming a transparent, adhesive film.
   • Low heat resistance (softening point: 70-90°C) and moderate weather resistance; prone to yellowing and brittleness under UV light or high temperatures.

Production Process

1. Harvesting:

2. Processing Methods:
   • Hot Filtering: Melt crude lac, filter out impurities, and cool to form "shellac flakes."
   • Solvent Extraction: Dissolve crude lac in ethanol, filter, and evaporate the solvent to obtain high-purity shellac (e.g., "bleached shellac").
   • Bleaching: Use sodium hypochlorite to remove pigments and produce light-colored shellac.
