Basic Information
Chemical Formula: TbCl3
English Name: Terbium(III) chloride
CAS Number: 10042-88-3 for anhydrous terbium chloride; 13798-24-8 for terbium chloride hexahydrate
Appearance: Anhydrous terbium chloride is a gray - white powder or white powdery substance; terbium chloride hexahydrate is a white or colorless crystal.
Molecular Weight: Approximately 265.284 for anhydrous terbium chloride; approximately 373.38 for terbium chloride hexahydrate
Physicochemical Properties
Density: Approximately 4.35 g/mL (25ºC, anhydrous)
Melting Point: The melting point of anhydrous terbium chloride is approximately 588ºC
Solubility: It is highly soluble in water and also readily soluble in ethanol. Anhydrous terbium chloride is highly hygroscopic, and terbium chloride hexahydrate gradually loses its water of crystallization when heated.
Preparation Method
It is usually prepared by the reaction of terbium(III) hydroxide (Tb(OH)3) with hydrochloric acid. Then, the aqueous solution is evaporated and concentrated, and the hexahydrate is precipitated after cooling. To obtain anhydrous terbium chloride, in order to avoid hydrolysis during the heating and dehydration process, a vacuum heating dehydration method in the presence of ammonium chloride can be used. The specific operation is as follows: The amount of ammonium chloride added is 30% of the crystalline material. After mixing the two, it is first dried at 300ºC to form a semi - dehydrated material, and then sent to a dehydration furnace for vacuum heating dehydration. The heating - up process is divided into stages such as room temperature → 100ºC → 120ºC → 155ºC → 200ºC, etc. The holding time at each stage depends on the amount of material, and the heating - up rate should not be too fast. The vacuum degree in the dehydration furnace should be maintained at not less than 66.7Pa, and the final dehydration temperature needs to reach 350ºC.
Uses
Metal Preparation: It is an important raw material for the production of terbium metal.
Chemical Reagent: It is used as a chemical reagent in fields such as biochemical research and can also serve as a standard substance for spectral analysis.
Intermediate: As an intermediate of terbium compounds, it is used to prepare other terbium - containing compounds and has applications in industrial aspects such as material synthesis.
Storage and Packaging
Storage: Due to its hygroscopic nature, it needs to be stored in a sealed container in a cool and dry place.
Packaging: Common packaging includes vacuum packaging (1, 2, 5, 25, 50 kg/piece), cardboard drum packaging (25, 50 kg/piece), woven bag packaging (25, 50, 500, 1000 kg/piece), etc. Customized packaging can also be provided according to user requirements.
