Basic Information
Product Name: Sodium Fluoborate
Formula: NaBF4
Molar Mass: 109.79 g/mol
CAS Number: 13755-29-8
Appearance: White crystalline powder or granules, odorless.
Solubility: Highly soluble in water (approximately 91 g/L at 25°C) and polar solvents like glycerol. Insoluble in most organic solvents.
Melting Point: Decomposes before melting (starts to break down at high temperatures, releasing toxic BF3 gas).
Density: ~2.47 g/cm³ (solid).
Chemical Properties
Stability: Stable under normal conditions, but reacts with strong acids (e.g., sulfuric acid) to release boron trifluoride (BF3), a toxic and corrosive gas.
Acidic Behavior: In aqueous solution, it dissociates into Na and BF4 ions. The BF4 ion is a weak acid in non-aqueous solvents but behaves as a stable complex in water.
Reactivity: Used in electroplating as a source of fluoride ions and boron; reacts with metals in certain industrial processes.
Applications
Electroplating Industry:
Used in zinc, cadmium, and aluminum electroplating baths to improve coating adhesion and surface finish.
Acts as a complexing agent for metal ions, enhancing the efficiency of electrolytic deposition.
Metal Treatment:
In metal cleaning and pickling processes to remove oxides and prepare surfaces for coating.
Ceramics and Glass:
As a flux in ceramic glazes and glass manufacturing to lower melting points and improve fluidity.
Chemical Synthesis:
A reagent in organic synthesis for fluorination reactions and as a catalyst in certain polymerization processes.
Agriculture (Historically):
Previously used as a pesticide or rodenticide, though restricted in many regions due to toxicity.
Health and Safety
Toxicity: Toxic if ingested, inhaled, or in contact with skin. Causes severe irritation to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
Environmental Hazards: Highly soluble in water, posing risks to aquatic life if released into ecosystems. Fluoride ions can accumulate in plants and animals.
Handling Precautions:
Wear protective gloves, goggles, and respiratory equipment (e.g., N95 mask) in dusty environments.
Store in tightly sealed containers, away from acids and moisture.
In case of spillage, neutralize with lime (CaO) and dispose of according to hazardous waste regulations.
