Appearance: Dark red crystalline powder
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; easily soluble in ethanol and alkaline solutions. 1g dissolves in approximately 1300ml water, 350ml ethanol, 500ml acetone; almost insoluble in ether and chloroform. It turns deep red when dissolved in hydroxide or carbonate solutions.

Main Applications
Acid-Base Indicator
A commonly used acid-base indicator. It shows orange at pH 6.6-8.0, yellow below pH 6.6, and red above pH 8.4, suitable for determining the acidity or alkalinity of solutions.
Cell Culture
Used as a pH indicator in culture media: red at neutral pH, yellow in acidic conditions, and purple in alkaline conditions. However, since phenol red can mimic the effects of steroid hormones (especially estrogen), phenol red-free media are sometimes used for culturing cells (particularly mammalian cells) to avoid steroid-related reactions.
Medical Diagnosis
Its sodium salt is used to assess liver function and diagnose renal function by measuring excretion rate in urine after intravenous injection.
Also used in diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection via chromoendoscopy.
Bacterial Culture
Used in preparing media like double sugar iron urea medium. In some bacterial culture experiments, when bacteria ferment carbohydrates to produce acid, phenol red in the medium changes from red to yellow, helping determine bacterial carbohydrate fermentation.
