Stable in acidic conditions but decomposes in strong bases or at high temperatures (>150°C), releasing toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas.
Applications
Industrial Biocide:
Widely used in oil fields, paper mills, and cooling water systems to inhibit bacteria (e.g., sulfate-reducing bacteria), fungi, and algae.
Advantages: High efficiency, low mammalian toxicity (but toxic to aquatic life), and easy degradation.
Agriculture and Aquaculture:
Used as a nematicide and disinfectant for soil treatment and aquaculture pond sterilization.
Other Uses:
An intermediate in organic synthesis for producing thiocyanato-containing pharmaceuticals or pesticides.
